The car looks very pleasing indeed, and sports both tranquil and at the same time tout lines, packed in a dynamic wedge shape. Both the front and rear of the car are harmoniously styled and well balanced. The roofline is elegant, with the added stylishness of the optional sunroof of our test car adding to the impression of refinement and airiness. The car looks timeless and modern at the same time, and will certainly age well.

The dashboard layout, choice of colours and quality of finish and materials are near perfect : the experience of a car manufacturer which has produced some 1.4 million C-Class automobiles since 2000 clearly leaves its mark here. The nice round clocks, the well laid out controls, the easy to read centre display, the typical use of chrome and wooden inlays in « our » Elegance version faithfully translate the heritage of the marque. What’s more, almost every control and function has an intuitive simplicity about it, again showing the « savoir faire » of the House. The somewhat limited leg space at the front due to the wide central tunnel and the limited visibility of the cars’ edges took some getting used to, but soon we felt safely « cocooned » in the car.

A big aluminum starting knob lets You start the engine, and the pleasant-feeling gear handle is put in drive. We all know that Mercedes makes excellent automatic gearboxes, and this 5-speed example proved no exception.

No electronic parking brake here, You have to grab under the dashboard for the release lever of the brake. Typically Mercedes, since decades now… and this makes You immediately feel at home, as does the sound of the engine, which certainly when cold gives this unique Mercedes Diesel throb. The engine is powerful – some 125 kW or 170 PS and makes the 1.5 ton car feel light and very responsive. It accelerates with vehemence when called for, 0-100 km costs a mere 8.5 seconds, which is faster than the 6.3 litre V8 300 SE, famous for its performance decades ago ! The top speed of some 228 kilometers also leaves little to be desired. The impressive torque of some 400 Nm at 2000 rpm in combination with the alert but smooth gearbox causes the 220 CDI to accelerate with ease and power from any speed.

We revelled again in the use of the cruise control, which is delightfully simple and easy to manipulate, and works very smooth indeed. Also of very high standard is the digital airco/climate control of the car, as are the firmly upholstered, solid feeling but very comfortable seats.

The unique qualities of the car lie in the effortless manner in which this power is harnessed and these performances are achieved. Every new C-Class comes equipped with AGILITY CONTROL suspension, which controls the shock absorber forces according to the driving situation: when driving normally with low shock absorber impulses, the damping forces are automatically reduced for ride comfort. When You engage in more spirited driving, the maximum damping forces are immediately set and the car feels very tout and stable. The steering of the new C-Class is six percent more direct than the steering of the preceding model. Well we can tell You, the car drives and handles like a dream.

Mercedes-Benz has also developed the ADVANCED AGILITY package with a sporty driving mode, which will become optionally available from autumn 2007. This offers the driver a choice of two gearshift programmes: Sport and Comfort. Within these programmes the shock absorber for each wheel has infinitely variable electronic control.

The C-Class also possesses, in the good tradition of the marque, very good fuel economy, and our 220 CDI version has a consumption between 5,9–6,7 l/100 km, with CO2-emissions between 156–173 g/km. At the Geneva show, Mercedes launched the C 220 Vision Bluetec, and we will see this technology for 4-cilinder engines introduced in 2008, beginning with the E-Class.

Our test car was also equipped with the optional Comand system, and we must admit that both the (central) control knobs and the display layout on the screen itself is logical and utterly clear. The audio function for example , as the photo shows, lets You choose the stations with ease, and the Harman Kardon Logic7 sound system is doing a very good job in handling jazz and classical music, the two music genres I prefer…

Of course You are quite safe in this Merc. You can equip Your C class optionally with the so-called PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system. This system is linked to active safety systems such as ESP® and Brake Assist, and is able to recognise critical driving manoeuvres at a very early stage.

As if this is not enough, You can also choose for the Intelligent Light System, developed by the House and is now for the first time available in the C-Class. Bi-xenon headlamps provide five different lighting functions suited to typical driving and weather conditions: country mode, motorway mode, enhanced foglamps, the Active Light System and cornering lights.

Our conclusion can only be this: this C-Class is a true Mercedes again with its qualities of taut solidity, impeccable finish, performance, comfort and safety and it will prove a solid investment and source of driving and owning pleasure for years to come…

Of course, in the near future we will drive the latest version of the CLS, a styling icon in its own right…but we started here with the "bestseller" of the range, first things first!

De wagen heeft een dynamische en toch een rustige en strakke uitstraling, en zowel de voor- als achterpartijen zijn harmonisch gestyld. De daklijn is erg elegant, want nog geaccentueerd werd door de donkere partij van het optionele glazen panoramadak, wat het interieur een aangenaam luchtig gevoel geeft. De lijnen van de wagen zijn tijdloos en ook modern, en zullen naar onze smaak niet snel verouderen.

De layout van het dashboard, de keuze van kleuren en materialen getuigen van de grote ervaring van deze constructeur die sedert 2000 liefst 1,4 miljoen C-Klasse exemplaren heeft gebouwd. De fraaie ronde klokken, de logisch te bedienen hendels, het subtiele gebruik van chroom en hout in « onze » Elegance versie vertalen trefzeker het « savoir faire » van het huis. De voetruimte vooraan is wat krap bemeten en de contouren van de auto zijn ook niet meteen zichtbaar, maar weldra kregen we toch een veilig « cocoon » gevoel in deze auto.

Het starten gebeurt nu met het indrukken van een grote aluminium startknop, en de prettig in de hand liggende schakelhendel gijdt vlot in de « drive » stand. Mercedes bouwt uitstekende automatische versnellingsbakken, en deze vijftraps transmissie maakt hierop geen uitzondering. Bij het wegrijden moet je toch nog onder het dashboard grijpen om de handrem los te maken, typisch Mercedes, en zo zijn we het al tientallen jaren gewend. De al even unieke Mercedes Diesel geluidscoulisse klinkt je ook vertrouwd in de oren, en zo voel je je meteen weer thuis onder « goed gesternte… » 

De motor is bepaald krachtig - liefst 170 pk - en de 1.6 ton zware auto is hierdoor merkwaardig agiel. De acceleratie is dan ook van kaliber: van 0 tot 100 spurt hij in amper 8.5 seconden, en dat is sneller dan de roemruchte 6.3 liter V8 300 SE ! Ook de top van 228 kilometer laat weinig te wensen over. Het hoge koppel van 400 Nm bij 2000 toeren en de vlot maar zacht schakelende automaat zorgen voor zeer vlotte acceleraties vanuit iedere snelheid.

We genoten weer van de heerlijk logisch en eenvoudig te bedienen cruise control, een van de beste in zijn soort. Ook de vootreffelijk werkende digitale airco/klimaatcontrole kon weer bekoren, evenals de stevig beklede, solide aanvoelende maar comfortabel zittende stoelen.

De sterke kanten van de nieuwe C-Klasse liggen in de soevereine manier waarop al die kracht wordt beheerst en deze prestaties worden neergezet. Iedere C-klasse is standaard uitgerust met het nieuwe AGILITY-CONTROL pakket, dat uit een selectief dempingssysteem bestaat. Hiermee wordt het onderstel automatisch op de conditie van het wegdek afgesteld. Als optie is bovendien het ADVANCED-AGILITY pakket met sportrijprogramma verkrijgbaar. Met dit pakket kunt u met een enkele druk op de knop beslissen of u comfortabel of eerder sportief wilt rijden.

De C-Klasse is naar goede merktraditie ook behoorlijk zuinig. De 220 CDI heeft een verbruik tussen 5.9 en 6.7 liter op 100 km, en de CO2 uitstoot ligt tussen de 156-173 g/km. Op het jongste Geneefse autosalon lanceerde Mercedes de C 220 Vision Bluetec, en we zullen deze Bluetec Dieseltechnologie voor viercilider motoren voor het eerst te zien krijgen op de E-Klasse.

Onze testwagen was uitgerust met het optionele comand systeem, en we moeten bekennen dat alle (centraal gelegen) controle en bedieningsknoppen en ook het schermdisplay logisch en volkomen duidelijk zijn. De audiofunctie bijvoorbeeld laat je heel eenvoudig en intuitief tussen de verschillende stations kiezen, en het Harman Kardon geluidsysteem Logic7 laat mijn twee favoriete muziekgenres, jazz en klassieke muziek, voortreffelijk doorklinken…

Ook kun je je C-Klasse uitrusten met het Pre-Safe stseem. De sensoren van ESP® en BAS herkennen kritieke situaties zoals sterk over- en onderstuur, gevaarlijke stuurbewegingen, noodstops. De elektronica van dit systeem analyseert deze gegevens en gaat vervolgens preventief ageren om de inzittenden te beschermen. De veiligheidsgordels worden automatisch strakker aangespannen en bij een uitrusting met Memory-pakket wordt de positie van de zetel van de voorpassagier automatisch aan de rijsituatie aangepast. Bovendien sluiten de zijruiten en het optionele schuif-/kanteldak of glazen panoramadak zich automatisch.

Alsof dit allemaal nog niet genoeg is, kunt u ook nog opteren voor het zogenaamde Intelligent Light System, op basis van bi-xenonkoplampen. De dimlichten passen zich telkens automatisch aan de rijsituatie aan. Zo wordt de rijweg op secundaire wegen breed verlicht en is de zichtbreedte op autosnelwegen duidelijk groter. Het Intelligent Light System omvat bovendien bredere mistlampen en actieve en statische bochtverlichting

Kortom, deze C-Klasse is weer een echte Mercedes met de traditonele kwaliteiten van het huis : soliede, vlekkeloos afgewerkt, compfort en veiligheid parend aan agiliteit en hoge prestaties. Kortom een van wagen waar je jarenlang plezier beleeft om hem te rijden én te koesteren…

Tenslotte zullen we u op deze plaats nog andere Mercedessen voorstellen, waaronder de nieuwe versie van de CLS, een waar styling icoon… maar met deze « bestseller » van wal steken leek ons toch aangewezen !
